Guwahati, May 2: In a major crackdown, Assam police on Thursday arrested four suspected gamblers from Assam’s Jorhat for allegedly betting on IPL cricket matches.
The accused has been identified as Rajani Baruah, Raju Mirdha, Arjun Karmakar and Guneswar Gowala of Mariani.
According to police, they were arrested from the Deberapar area of Mariani in Jorhat.
“The accused has been involved in setting up gambling dens in the locality and dealing in several lakhs during IPL cricket match days. We have received an tip off regarding their presence and organising the gambling in a secret manner. We have launched an operation and nabbed them,” said a police official.
According to police, Rajani Baruah was the mastermind of the gambling den and he has a previous history of being involved in such activities.
On the other hand, Tinsukia police recovered a cash worth Rs 62,80,890 from the residence of one Nikhil Agarwal from Parbotia area of Tinsukia on Thursday.
Recently, police have arrested one Bikash Beria from Tinsukia for allegedly running the IPL betting racket which involved many youths. Bikash Beria’s brother Nitin Beria is on run, who used to be the main person in distributing users IDs and passwords to customers.
