IPSA seeks 3rd party intervention at UNHRC as India fails to solve Manipur crisis

Must read

Guwahati, June 29: The International Peace and Social Advancement (IPSA) has sought the help of a third party to resolve the crisis arising out of Kuki-Meitei clashes as the Indian government has been unable to resolve the issue even after a year.

This was revealed by IPSA working president and CORCOMI spokesperson Khuraijam Athouba, who is representing the plight of Manipur at the 56th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), in a video message on Friday.

This session is taking place from June 18 to July 12 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

“We need assistance to combat the narco-terrorist activities and the emergence of a new Golden Triangle in Northeast India… We call for decisive action to address the impact of uncontrolled cross-border immigration over the past 70 years, an issue the government has consistently failed to manage sincerely,” Athouba said.

He lamented that to date there isn’t any visible serious attempt or intent by the Indian government to resolve the crisis. “It is evident that the people of Manipur can no longer rely solely on the Indian state. We must seek third-party interventions to ensure rationality and accountability in addressing this crisis as per available national and international standard laws and conventions,” he said.

“Therefore, we urgently appeal to the international community, especially those dedicated to the welfare and security of indigenous peoples, to extend their support,” he said.

Athouba expressed profound discontentment with the newly formed Indian government and the dismissive attitude of the President of India during her keynote address at the beginning of the first session of the Parliament.

Athouba said: “The 1st session of the new government’s deliberate ignorance towards the ongoing crisis in Manipur is not merely unfortunate; it is a blatant indication of the systematic deprivation and marginalization imposed upon the state and its people by the Indian government.”

“The disheartening attitude of the President of India in her keynote address is a stark reflection of this neglect. Her failure to even acknowledge the grim human rights situation in Manipur is not only irresponsible but also a violation of the fundamental human rights of the people,” he added.
