JSU demands MBBS merit list correction, Khasi-Jaintia students be shifted to open category

Must read

Shillong, Oct 3: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has demanded the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) to re-adjust the merit list and seat allotments besides shifting of eligible Khasi and Jaintia candidates to the open category merit list, with no alteration to their current college/institution allotments within seven days.

This came after there has been alleged irregularities in the merit list and seat allotments for MBBS admissions under the central pool quota.

In a complaint submitted to the DHS on Friday, JSU has claimed that meritorious Khasi and Jaintia students have been denied their rightful places in the Open Category despite having higher NEET scores than some selected candidates.

The union has identified specific discrepancies in the published lists, including the placement of lower-scoring candidates in the Open Category ahead of higher-scoring Khasi and Jaintia students.

The union has pointed out specific instances where meritorious candidates from the Khasi and Jaintia categories have been overlooked in favor of less meritorious candidates in the Open Category.

A Khasi and Jaintia category candidate (Rikor Nongkynrih) with a higher NEET score (475) has been placed below an Open Category candidate (Diya Ghosh) with a lower score (472), it said adding that a 7th-ranked Khasi and Jaintia category candidate (Suwandaka Wann) with a NEET score of 443 has been placed below an Open Category candidate (Tanushka Chakravorty) with a lower score (442).

It also alleged that a Khasi and Jaintia category student (Amebaaihunsha Kharbhih)with a higher NEET score (445) has been allotted a seat at RIMS, Imphal, while an Open Category candidate (Tanushka Chakravorty) with a lower score (442) has also been allotted a seat at the same institution.

According to the union, this not only contravenes established legal precedents but also deprives deserving students of opportunities aligned with their academic excellence.

“(We demand) shifting the following eight Khasi & Jaintia candidates (Rikor Nongkynrih with 475, Niki Arrisa Shylla with 468, Rapmi Toi with 467, Bryan Lionel Nongsiej with 463, Phibankyntiew Kharkongor with 449, Amebaaihunsha Kharbhih with 445, Suwandaka Wann with 443, and Eleazer Vincent Lyngdoh with 442), all of whom meet or exceed the merit threshold for Open Category consideration, to the Open Category merit list, effective immediately. Ensure no alteration to their current college/institution allotments (e.g., RIMS Imphal, Lady Hardinge MC) during this migration,” the JSU said in the complaint.

The union has also demanded utilizing of the freed reserved seats to accommodate additional Khasi & Jaintia candidates from the waiting list, maximizing community benefits.

“Treat this matter with utmost urgency due to the scheduled commencement of seat acceptance and bond agreement on October 03, 2025. Issue a corrigendum and upload the revised list on meghealth.gov.in at the earliest. Provide a detailed response to this complaint within 7 days,” it stated.
