Shillong, July 12: Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyoitraditya Scindia on Friday said he has been pleasantly taken aback with Meghalaya’s vision to develop the new Shillong investment area.

Speaking to reporters here at the sidelines of a review meeting on development projects in the region, Scindia said, “I have been truly taken aback and pleasantly so with the plan that the Chief Minister (Conrad Sangma) has for the new Shillong investment area”.

Scindia said Sangma informed him about setting up a new directorate for the Shillong investment area project, and during his discussions with the CM he has given his inputs on it. “I have given my inputs, in our discussions given various inputs as to how we should look at a new modern city, with our traditional strengths,” Scindia said.

He further outlined the areas of core competence and comparative and competitive advantage of Meghalaya and said the state should focus on sectors such as tourism, agriculture and Information technology.

The Union Minister said the DoNER ministry would not only work on individual projects but would also work on “macro strategy” in Meghalaya.

This, Scindia said, keeping in mind, comparative and comparative advantages vis-a-vis other north-eastern states or the 36 States and Union territories, or immediate neighbouring countries.

Hinting that Meghalaya’s advantage of sharing its border with Bangladesh would be taken into consideration and develop “aspects of international trade and international connectivity.”
