Kamrup Metro Administration issues advisory and helpline for floods

Guwahati, July 3: With water levels rising in Guwahati Kamrup Metro district administration has asked residents to remain vigilant.

The water level of the Brahmaputra River has surpassed the danger mark of 49.68 m in Guwahati and is approaching the record high of 51.46 m set on July 21, 2004. As of midnight on July 2, the water level reached 50.72 m.

The administration has established a helpline at 1077/93654-29314 for emergencies.

The public advisory says that all the people located in the riverfront, river banks and close to the river course are requested to stay alert for all possible breach of the river banks or embankments or overflows.

The district administration has imposed a ban on country boats on the Brahmaputra River and any associated fishing activities until further notice. Recognizing potential risks, authorities have reiterated the importance of avoiding flowing water. They have also emphasized the need to steer clear of floodwaters due to possible contamination. Swimming in flooded rivers, streams, or any other flowing water bodies is strictly prohibited.

Children and the elderly are advised to remain in safe locations and be wary of snakes, animals, and other flood-related hazards. Citizens are instructed to avoid contact with submerged electrical equipment, including transformers, inverters, posts, and wires. Only trained swimmers should attempt water rescues; others should seek assistance from SDRF or VDP personnel.

The public has also been asked to follow local news, emergency alerts, and instructions from local authorities and emergency responders. In case of any evacuation orders from the authorities, the citizens must follow the same. They have also requested the public to be vigilant and inform any Govt authority, including the DC Office, Circle Office, Local Police Station, or Water Resources Department, for immediate intervention of the Government so that life and property can be protected.
