Guwahati, June 20: The preliminary investigation conducted by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has found that the goods train was speeding at 40-45 kmph instead of 10-15 kmph when it collided with the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express on Monday morning near Jalpaiguri in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district, that killed at least nine passengers and injured 41 others due to the derailment of the Kanchanjunga Express.

According to NFR sources, there were two level crossing before accident site, in both cases the level crossing railway men failed to report to the station master that the goods train was on higher speed then permitted.

“The goods train was given paper signal 15 minutes after Kanchanjunga Express, enough time to reach next station if goods train would have adhered to speed limits. Kanchanjunga was going as per SOP, but the speeding up of goods train caused the speed deferential that also has undone the time space difference of 10-15 minutes,” said the NFR source.
