Shillong, Dec 5: President of the Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) Dr DRL Nonglait on Monday decided not to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, to be held next year.
Dr Nonglait told reporters that he had seen his name as one among the contenders for the United Democratic Party (UDP) ticket from the Shillong parliamentary seat.
He, however, said but the fact is that he had never requested the UDP for a ticket. “We also cannot deny the fact that some of the leaders and members of the UDP did approach me and proposed my name,” Dr Nonglait said.
He said after coming back from the Delhi protest to demand inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution, he met the leaders of the party. “After a thorough discussion, I realised that I cannot quit the post I am holding now (as KAS president). Therefore, I will not apply for a ticket from the UDP or from other political parties,” Dr Nonglait said.
The KAS president said that he still wants to lead the organization especially when his tenure would end till 2025 in pursuing the long pending demand.
“I don’t mean to say that there is dearth of leaders in the KAS but it is only that we still need to pursue the demand for inclusion and to recognize Khasi as an official language,” he said adding “And to join active politics is something which I need to take a call.”
