Dibrugarh, Sept 24: Keh-Meh-Haa, a traditional post-harvest festival of the Idu Mishmi community of Arunachal Pradesh was celebrated with much pomp and gaiety in Anini, the district headquarters of Dibang Valley district on Tuesday.
The festival was organized by the Dibang Valley District Students’ Union, during which hundreds of people thronged the festival ground from the nooks and corner of the district and also from the nearby districts.
The festival is a celebration of the rice harvest by the Idu Mishmi community, wherein ‘Keh’ means rice, ‘Meh’ means new, and ‘Haa’ means eating.
The main ritual of the festival is the Keh frih, which involves burning paddy in the house to offer to the goddesses Ini – Apesha and Ini – Apeh Milli. Offering deities for good harvest, peace, and prosperity is the objective of the festival.
Dozi Tana Tara, President, All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) was the chief guest on the occasion, while Pagli Sora, DC, Dibang Valley district was the guest of honour. Ringu Ngupok, SP, Dibang Valley district, Lambok Margnar, President of Khasi Students’ Union, Col. Aditya Kulkarni, Commanding Officer, 5 Grenadier, were present as special invitees.
The welcome address was delivered by Ajen Mipi, President of the Dibang Valley District Students Union. The mythology of the festival was explained by Bata Mipi, a priest of the community.
In their speeches, most of the speakers laid stress upon preservation of their own language, culture, and traditions in order to protect indigenous identity and rich cultural values.
