SHILLONG, MAY 24: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to disallow people from staying in Iewduh market with effect from June 1.

Ten enforcement constables of the council will also be engaged for conducting night duty for ensuring safety and security of this oldest and biggest traditional market in the state.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, KHADC chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem informed that he has convened a meeting with the Syiem and officials of the Hima Mylliem and representatives of the Hynniewtrep Iewduh Association (HIA).

“Today’s meeting was in continuation of the earlier meeting we had (with the six dorbar shnongs surrounding the Iewduh market) to discuss on how to prevent the illegal activities including drug menace. Accordingly, we have taken few decisions in this regard to ensure the overall safety and security of Iewduh,” Syiem told reporters.

“We have decided to come up with an order directing the Hima Mylliem not to allow people to stay in Iewduh with effect from June 1,” he said.

He said in the past, few shop owners have requested the Hima Mylliem to allow them to engage people to stay in their respective shops to prevent theft.

“However, this has only encouraged others to come and stay in Iewduh, thereby using the market for residential purposes,” Syiem said.

Referring to the recent eviction of illegal settlers at Lum Survey, the KHADC chief said, “In view of this, the Council has also issued strong warning against those who attempt to violate the order because we will not allow anybody to stay in the market.”

“People, who used to stay in the market with the permission of the Hima Mylliem, will no longer be allowed to do so from June 1,” he added.

Further, the KHADC chief also informed that the council has emphasized on the need to strengthen the security of Iewduh market.

“We have decided to provide ten enforcement constables to do night duty along with the ten security personnel engaged by the Hima Mylliem in the market,” he said. He said that the council has fixed 10 pm as closing time for Iewduh market and anybody violating this order will be punished as per the council’s market Act.

“These decisions have been taken to prevent illegal activities by anti-social elements, who are trying to make Iewduh as a safe haven,” Syiem stated.
