Shillong, Aug 18: The Executive Committee (EC) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Friday convened a Border Committee meeting with community leaders from five disputed areas to encourage people’s participation in voicing their desire to be part of Meghalaya during the visits of the Regional Committees from both the states of Meghalaya and Assam.
The five areas include Desh Domreah (Hima Mylliem), Ka Nongwah Mawtamur (Hima Sohiong and Hima Jirang), Borduar (Hima Nongspung and Nongkhlaw), Langpih (Hima Nongmynsaw), and Block-II (Raid Nongtung under Hima Khyrim).
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Deputy Chief Executive Member (CEM) of KHADC, P. N Syiem, said the KHADC aims to ensure full participation from residents of these disputed areas in expressing their desire to be part of the state of Meghalaya when the Regional Committees of both Meghalaya and Assam visit these areas.
Syiem further noted that the leaders of these Himas, who were present during the meeting, expressed their aspirations to join Meghalaya, given their existing affiliation with Khasi Himas such as Hima Mylliem, Nongkhlaw, and Khyrim.
Expanding on the strategy, Syiem explained that these Hima leaders would educate the people within their respective Himas. This approach aims to garner support from the local communities, which would ultimately aid the Meghalaya Regional Committee during their visit for spot inspections.
It is worth mentioning that the Regional Committees of Meghalaya and Assam have decided to visit Desh Domreah, Ka Nongwah Mawtamur, and Borduar in August (post-Independence Day). This visit seeks to find an amicable solution to the ongoing inter-state border dispute. Following these visits, the two Regional Committees will proceed to Ri Bhoi and Block-II areas in addressing the remaining areas of differences.
