KHADC holds ‘Border Council Meeting’ on Assam-Meghalaya border agreement, expresses dissatisfaction

Shillong, April 18: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) along with traditional institutions on Monday held a ‘Border Council Meeting’ to express their dissatisfaction on the recent MoU signed by Assam and Meghalaya on inter-state border issue, asserting that they were not kept in the loop on the MoU.

The boundary meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Executive Member (CEM) Gigur Myrthong, former CEM and Congress MDC PN Syiem, nominated MDC and veteran politician Bindo Lanong, Executive Member in charge of Elaka, traditional heads were from Jirang, Mylliem, Nongspung, Nonglang, and Jyrngam to discuss the imbroglio arising out of the MoU.

Speaking to the press, Executive Member in charge of Elaka administration Jambor War said, “The signing of the MoU was done without consulting the stakeholders, landowners, dorbar shnong, dorbar raid and Dorbar hima especially the District Council which is a constitutional body.”

He added, “We have decided to defer the meeting to April 26 and discuss in detail what needs to be done on the serious issue.”

Echoing War, Lanong said that stakeholders who attended the meeting have voiced their dissatisfaction against the state government for signing the MoU without consulting the District Council and traditional institutions.

“The state government has gone out of its way. If I may say so. This will neither bring solution nor satisfaction. We will try our best if possible and if the state government can mend its stand and commitment,” he said.

Stating that the KHADC does not want to get into loggerheads with the state government, he said that the KHADC will stand on the basis of facts, figures, documents, maps, historical facts.

He further observed that there are many lapses in the MoU signed by the state government.

“We will meet on 26th of this month and then we will try to hold a dialogue with the state government if possible and that it should take into confidence the District Council as the main constitutional body where the traditional institutions are involved,” he said.
