2nd death from drowning on Easter Monday

Tura, April 18: Another death from drowning has been reported in East Garo Hills, raising the death toll to 2 victims, during Easter Monday celebrations.

After 16 year old Niksrap Sangma of Gondenggre village went missing in the Simsang river in Rongkem spot of Samanda, another body has been fished out from the Chichra Manda river located between Wa’ge Asi and Rongmil, close to the border with North Garo Hills district, on the same day.

Police rescue teams along with village divers brought out the body of Sengja D Shira, aged 26-30 years, from the Chichra Manda river in Wage Asi area, close to the border with North Garo Hills.

He was from Damas in North Garo Hills and joined a picnic group to the Manda river when he was struck by tragedy.

But, the body of the 16 year old boy from Gondenggre who disappeared into the Simsang river at Rongkem is still to be found.

EastGaro Hills district administration has warned the public to avoid water bodies in the light of the recent thunderstorms that have raised the water level to alarming levels.

“Due to recent rains, the Simsang river has started to swell. We request all to stay away from river sides and stay safe,” the district police chief Bruno A Sangma informed.
