KHADC & JHADC extension: Paul reminds of GHADC’s 2-year extension during Mukul’s tenure as CM

Must read

Shillong, Feb 6: UDP working person and cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh on Monday said there is nothing unprecedented behind the government’s decision to approve extension of the term of the KHADC and JHADC by another six months.

“All I can say is that this is not unprecedented. In the past, the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has had two years of extension when Dr Mukul Sangma was chief Minister. So an extension of six months when compared to what was done in the past, an extension of two years, is certainly and relatively a very brief period,” Lyngdoh told reporters.

He said that last year, the state government had already been approached by the district councils for the much needed revision and redefinition of the various constituencies.

“As you are aware, some of these constituencies have voters of roughly 15,000 to 19,000 but there are some constituencies which have three times that number. So, in all fairness, if an MDC is to deliver, at least there should be a certain amount of parity,” Lyngdoh reasoned.
