Shillong, June 25: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Saturday passed an official resolution urging the Centre not to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) within the Council’s jurisdiction.
“Therefore, this House do now resolved to urge Government of India not to implement the Uniform Civil Code within the jurisdiction of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council in order to safeguard and protect our interest as provided under the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India,” KHADC chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem said while tabling the resolution during the ongoing summer session of the council.
He said that the intention of the central government to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the country, will affect and do away with our customs, traditions, practices, inheritance, marriage and religious freedom.
