Shillong, June 28: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Wednesday requested the state government to convene a meeting with all the three Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) to discuss the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India.

“We want the state government to convene a meeting with the three ADCs – KHADC, JHADC and GHADC – to discuss on the issue,” KHADC chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem told reporters after a meeting with a delegation of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) at his office chamber.

He said the new executive committee during its first meeting had discussed the matter and resolved to soon meet the state government for submission of its views and suggestions with regards to the proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule.

Syiem also informed that the EC has also assured the delegation of the KSU that the KHADC will continue to oppose mining of uranium by not issuing any NOC in this regard.

“We also reminded them (KSU) that the EC and the KHADC had decided not to issue NOC to the Centre or State for construction of railway line as we are also maintaining the same stand that till such time effective anti-influx mechanisms are put in place, we don’t feel it is right to allow the railway line to come,” he said.

He also assured that his EC is willing to work together with the KSU on the various issues confronting the indigenous community.

Meanwhile, the CEM also informed that the deputy CEM Pynshngainlang N Syiem will also convene a meeting on Friday to draft a letter of the council for expressing opposition against the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) within the jurisdiction of the KHADC.
