Kharlukhi calls for probe into MPSC irregularities, offers to resign if wife found guilty

Must read

Shillong, Sept 26: Lone NPP Rajya Sabha MP Dr WR Kharlukhi on Thursday demanded an independent inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) even as he announced his willingness to resign as MP if his wife is found guilty.

In a letter to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Kharlukhi said, “I would like to draw to your kind attention that, of late, it has come out in the news about irregularities in the Meghalaya Public Service Commission. Mrs Corina Lyngdoh, who is one of the members in the Commission, is my wife and I feel that this has tarnished the image of my family. So to set the record right I would request the Government to go for an independent inquiry on this issue.”

He also requested that the inquiry be completed within a month’s time.

Addressing media persons, Kharlukhi said, “Me and my wife were talking (about this) and she said if they find I have done (any wrong) I am ready to go to jail. Also, if the independent inquiry finds that my Mrs is involved, next day I will resign as Member of Parliament so that they will know what type of a man of substance I am.”

He said his demand for inquiry is to ensure that everything should be with facts and not based on hearsay.

“There is a Supreme Court ruling in which 87.5% is written and 12.5% is the personal and not only that, why this ruling comes? It comes because there were irregularities in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) and on being inquired by some departments, it was found out that it was true and till date, the chairman APSC is in jail,” Kharlukhi said.

“So no commission in the whole of India will dare go against this decision of the supreme court,” he said while urging the press fraternity to also investigate instead of publishing news based on hearsay.

Further, Kharlukhi said people are making allegations of corruption and often the blame goes to the NPP. “But I find that this is actually only politics. If you have the guts (find out the truth),” he said.

He also cited the recent case relating to the allegation made by Congress chief Vincent H Pala against deputy chief minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who slapped him with a Rs 100 crore legal notice.

“See Pala what did he do? He talked about drugs and brought the name of deputy chief minister. Okay if he (Pala) is wrong, he will be poor by 100 crore but if he is right deputy chief minister will be in jail. It should be like this. Don’t generalise. You find out and pinpoint,” he stated.
