SHILLONG, APR 24: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has demanded the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to rename Khanapara in Ri Bhoi district by giving it a Khasi name.

“We have suggested the need to rename Khanapara by giving it a Khasi name taking into consideration that it is located right at the interstate border with Assam,” KHNAM working president Thomas Passah said after a meeting with the KHADC chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem on Wednesday.

He said the party is of the view that Khanapara is in fact a non-tribal name and this will make it difficult for the state to claim ownership rights over the land adding this assumed significance in view of the ongoing boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.

“We will soon give our proposal in writing to the KHADC for necessary consideration,” Passah said while adding that the CEM, while welcoming the suggestion, had requested the delegation to also propose a tribal name for consideration of the council.
