Shillong, July 6: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Central body, led by President Lambokstar Marngar and General Secretary Donald Thabah, along with members, erected an ILP check gate at Pahammawlein village (20mer) on National Highway-6 in Ri Bhoi on Saturday.
This action was taken to protest against the state government’s perceived indifference towards combating illegal influxes into Meghalaya.
KSU leaders and members erected the ILP check gate to stop outsiders illegally entering Meghalaya and conducted checks on public vehicles entering the state via National Highway-6. They examined documents, and those without valid documentation were not allowed to enter the state.
Upon erecting the ILP check gate and conducting vehicle checks, the Magistrate and Ri Bhoi Police arrived at the scene and intervened, and urged the KSU to halt the erection of the ILP check gate and requesting dialogue.
KSU President Lambokstar Marngar and General Secretary Donald Thabah stated that the reason behind this action was to protest against the state and central governments’ reluctance to implement the ILP and the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA). They criticized the governments for taking the issue of illegal influxes lightly, which they believe poses a future threat to the indigenous population.
They further mentioned that this was not the first time they had erected an ILP check gate; they have done so several times in the past to combat illegal influxes. They emphasized that the failure of the state government to address this issue threatens to overshadow the indigenous community.
The KSU leaders also insisted that the MRSSA should be implemented by the state government, and the central government should enforce the ILP in Meghalaya. They warned that if these measures are not implemented, the KSU will continue to check for illegal influxes in various parts of the state to ensure that no illegal entries occur in the future.
