Shillong July 15: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has established another Inner Line Permit (ILP) checkpoint at National Highway-6 in Umkiang, East Jaiñtia Hills, on Monday. This measure aims to prevent the entry of suspected illegal migrants into the state.
This is the third ILP checkpoint set up by the KSU, with previous checkpoints located in Pahammawlein village and Athiabari Road in West Khasi Hills. The KSU has taken this action as a form of protest to pressure the government into implementing the ILP and the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).
To ensure no untoward incidents occur, the police and district administration are maintaining a presence in the area.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the Chief Minister’s statement on the Work Permit, the KSU displayed a banner reading, “The Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation & Employment and Condition of Service) Act 1979 (Work Permit) has been implemented in the State since 28 July, 2011.”
Additionally, the KSU has alleged that the Infiltration Check Points in many areas have turned into tax collection points for certain individuals.
