KSU issues warning to non-tribals, reminds of repeating anti-foreigner movement of 80s & 90s

Shillong, July 7: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Friday issued a strong warning to leaders of the different non-tribal communities following the scuffle that led to the arson incident at Laitumkhrah police station.

In a statement, KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah said that the union has received information that the incident at Laitumkhrah was allegedly due to assault on local youth by non-tribals.

“Surprisingly, the CRPF personnel were protecting the non-tribal while beating up local youth with lathi,” he alleged.

Thabah said that the union is still collecting more information on the reasons that led to the incident.

“Such incidents have reminded the KSU of the previous years during the 70s, 80s and 90s when non-tribal were trying to ensure the Khasis flee from Shillong,” he alleged.

The KSU leader further told the leaders of the different non-tribal communities to refrain their own people from indulging in such incidents, failing which the union will be compelled to take stern actions as was done by its former leaders, who led the anti-foreigners’ movement.

“If the union is forced to take such actions, the non-tribal communities and the government should take full responsibility for the consequences,” he stated.
