Shillong, Dec 15: The pressures groups of Meghalaya on Wednesday met Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in relation to the Assam – Meghalaya border issue after the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) submitted its Border Committee report on the village records situation in the disputed areas.
Khasi Student Union (KSU) General Secretary Donal V Thaba told reporters that only six areas (which are not major areas of disturbances) were discussed in Wednesday’s meeting.
“We make a stand that the government of Meghalaya should take into consideration all the traditional heads, the residents of the border areas, which the government also answered in the affirmative,” said Thabah.
The KSU leader said they have told the CM that while demarcating the border with the present government of Assam, the government should take into account the very concept of Hill State. “When the new state of Meghalaya was created, it was created on the basis of linguistic lines, ethnicity, customary law, traditions, things which are binding us…if any areas of Khasi or Garo Hills goes to Assam, then the very concept of Hill State is incomplete,” added Thabah.
He explained that if a Khasi or a Garo village goes to Assam, the residents will lose their Schedule Tribe status and other privileges like the Rangbah Shnong, the Raid or the Elaka.
Because of these aspects the union urged the government to seriously examine the matter as these areas should never fall into Assam.
On the ‘Give and Take’ policy, Thabah said the KSU doesn’t understand the concept but asserted that it was Assam that is encroaching into Meghalaya, especially in Block 1 and Block 2 and Langpih areas.
Thabah also lauded the MDA government for taking such an initiative but urged the Government to not take any hasty steps as this is a very serious and sensitive issue.
