Williamnagar, June 5: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), East Garo Hills, joined hands with the Agricultural Management Technology Agency (ATMA) to organize a grand celebration of World Environment Day at the KVK Office in Megagre.
The event witnessed active participation from 86 individuals.
The primary objective of the program was to raise awareness among the farming community about the importance of sustainable living and inspire individuals to make positive changes in their lifestyles to preserve and nurture the environment. The event kicked off with the inauguration of an exhibition showcasing various organic and natural products, aiming to create awareness about climate-resilient crops.
Dr. Brijendra Singh, Senior Scientist & Head of KVK East Garo Hills, highlighted the significance of the exhibition, environmental awareness, and the plantation drive. Dr. Ksh. Sobita Devi, DDM, NABARD, emphasized the need to conserve resources, reduce waste, and minimize the use of single-use plastic to protect our beautiful environment. Tengman N. Sagma, Project Director of ATMA, focused on creating a plastic-free environment and promoting waste recycling. Silje Sangma, DPO, ICDS, shed light on the environmental disadvantages of jhum cultivation and monocropping of areca-nut on hill slopes, pointing out their contribution to soil erosion due to the shallow root system.
During the technical session, Dr. Yanglem Sofia Devi, Subject Matter Specialist in Agronomy, explained the concept of Climate Resilient and Smart Agriculture, providing valuable insights on adapting to changing environmental conditions.
Threema Mechri R Sangma, ATM, ATMA, addressed the topic of Agricultural Waste Management, underlining its importance in sustainable farming practices.
Before the conclusion of the program, all participants took the “Pledge for Life” to adopt environmentally friendly habits and contribute to the protection of the environment. The program culminated with a vote of thanks and a mass tree plantation drive in the KVK campus and Megagre village, symbolizing the commitment towards a greener future.
