Kyrmen Shylla says no railway in Jaintia Hills without consent of local residents

Must read

Shillong, Oct 26: Cabinet Minister and MLA of Khliehriat, Kyrmen Shylla, on Thursday said it is too early to comment on the arrival of a railway line in JaiƱtia Hills as he emphasized that if the development is for the benefit of the people, he is not against it. However, if it does not serve any purpose for the people, then he is against it.

Recently, Cabinet Minister Comingone Ymbon expressed support for introducing railway lines in Jaintia Hills, anticipating positive impacts on the region’s populace.

Shylla underlined that all legislators, including himself, are dedicated to serving the best interests of the people.

Shylla asserted that any decision regarding the railway project’s implementation in East JaiƱtia Hills would only proceed with the consent of the local residents. He disclosed that preliminary discussions were held with stakeholders, and a public meeting is scheduled to gather community opinions on the matter.

He emphasized that the government’s course of action would align with the wishes of the people, either by implementing the railway project if widely accepted or by respecting the community’s decision if they choose otherwise.

Notably, Meghalaya government has expressed its intentions to introduce railway connectivity in East Jaintia Hills District. However, various pressure groups are vehemently opposing the idea of having railways in any area of the Khasi-JaiƱtia region, emphasizing the necessity for a robust influx control mechanism, such as the Inner Line Permit (ILP).
