New Delhi, Dec 29: The Income Tax Department has issued a stern warning to taxpayers who missed the July 31 deadline to file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the financial year 2022-23.
Through a post on the social media platform X, the department emphasised that these taxpayers must complete the filing process by December 31, 2023. This serves as the ‘last chance’ for individuals to submit their belated or revised ITR for the specified financial year.
In their social media announcement, the Income Tax Department also provided clarification on the distinction between revised and belated ITRs.
Taking to X, the Income Tax official handle posted, “Kind Attention Taxpayers, 31st December, 2023 is your last chance to file a belated/revised ITR for AY 2023-2024. Hurry! File your ITR before the due date.”
Also, the department has shared a link to its official website, providing users with comprehensive information on filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs).

Steps to file your ITR:
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
Step 2: Log in using your User ID (PAN), Password, and Captcha code.
Step 3: Navigate to the ‘e-File’ menu and select ‘Income Tax Return.’
Step 4: Click ‘Continue’ and fill in all applicable and mandatory fields in the Online ITR Form.
Step 5: Choose the suitable Verification option in the ‘Taxes Paid and Verification’ tab.
Step 6: Select one of the verification methods: ‘I would like to E-Verify,’ ‘I would like to E-Verify later within 120 days,’ or ‘I don’t want to E-Verify.’
Step 7: If opting for physical verification, send a signed ITR-V to “Centralized Processing Center, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru – 560 500” within 120 days.
Step 8: Click ‘Preview and Submit,’ verify all entered data, and ‘Submit’ the ITR.
Step 9: If choosing ‘I would like to E-Verify,’ complete the e-Verification using EVC/OTP within 60 seconds.
Step 10: For auto-submitted ITR, verify later via ‘My Account > E-Verify Return’ or by sending a signed ITR-V to CPC
