Guwahati, Jan 11: 11th January was a day of joy and celebration in Kaziranga as Pori, the youngest member of its elephant family, marked her first birthday in grand style.
The festivities began with a thorough health check-up for all elephants by a team of veterinarians. They examined the majestic animals for any signs of abscess, fungal infections, or foot nail overgrowth, ensuring their well-being.
The highlight of the day was a special feast featuring an array of seasonal fruits—bananas, sugarcane, oranges, grapes, and apples—prepared for the elephants. Kaziranga, home to 65 departmental and 39 private elephants, saw the private elephants, currently engaged in tourism activities from the Bagori range, join in the celebration.
Little Pori stayed close to her protective mother, Bhadoi, showcasing her shy demeanor. Meanwhile, Gadapani, a playful two-year-old male calf and Pori’s friend, stole the show with his curiosity and antics, thoroughly enjoying the fruit treats.
Visitors, especially children, were delighted by the unique birthday celebration, which beautifully highlighted Assam’s rich tradition of human-elephant bonding. The event underscored the compassion and familial love extended to these gentle giants, reminding all of the harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife in this remarkable region.
