TURA, June 23: A delegation of the students union of the College of Teachers Education in Tura have met with Education Minister Rakkam Sangma on Thursday to submit a memorandum seeking the introduction of Masters in Teachers’ Education course and increase in the number of seats to a 100 capacity.

The CTE-SU delegation stated that these demands have garnered attention and support from students, faculty, and the local community alike, as it holds great
promise for the future of teacher education in the college which is known as B.Ed College and is the only government run training institution for teachers across Garo Hills region.
One of the primary concerns addressed in the memorandum is the need
for an increase in seat capacity as the rising number of aspiring teachers seeking admission has made the current capacity insufficient to accommodate the growing demand.

By requesting an expansion of the seat capacity, the college aims to ensure that more students can pursue their dreams of becoming educators without facing unnecessary hurdles or compromising on the quality of their education, states the memo.

“A larger seat capacity would not only benefit the student community but also contribute to the overall development of the education sector in the state. By producing a greater number of well-trained teachers, it will positively impact the quality of education in schools throughout the state, ultimately benefiting the entire community” said Thomas M. Marak, the President of CTE-SU.

On the introduction of the Masters or M.Ed course in the college, the union stated that the advanced program would provide postgraduate-level education to aspiring educators and professionals already working in the field of
education.

It said that the M.Ed course would offer specialized knowledge, research opportunities, and advanced pedagogical skills that would equip educators to address the evolving challenges and demands of the modern educational landscape.

“The inclusion of an M.Ed course at CTE-SU would not only attract highly motivated and experienced individuals seeking professional development but would also enhance the prestige and reputation of the institution. By catering to the educational needs of teachers who are looking to upskill and progress in their careers, CTE, Rongkhon, would
become a hub for advanced teacher training, further cementing its position as a leading institution for teacher education in the state” said Anthony A Sangma, General Secretary, CTE-SU.
