Shillong, Aug 24: Hundreds of locals along with the members of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in Lapangap, West Jaintia Hills, confronted a group of individuals from the Karbi Anglong area, who allegedly had ulterior motives.
Reportedly, the Karbi group had intentions of damaging the agricultural produce and plantations of the Khasi people. However, their efforts were thwarted by the united front of Khasi locals along with the KSU members.
This stand-off led to heated exchange of words between the two sides, with the situation quickly escalating and tensions boiling, taking the situation almost to the brink of violence. However, the timely arrival of police forces from Assam and Meghalaya de-escalated the situation.
Mentionably, situation in Khanduli Village and nearby areas, which border Assam, has been tense for months now due to the frequent clashes between the Jaintia (pnar) and Karbi communities occupying the area. Without a clear demarcation of the States’ boundaries and both communities having lands on either side, the communities often clash over trespassing and land grabbing.
