Man- animal conflict, wild elephants destroy crops in Assam’s south Kamrup

Guwahati, May 24: A herd of wild elephants were roaming freely in several villages of Rangamati area near Vijayanagar, the commercial hub of South Kamrup district for the past several months. The herd came down to the nearby villages in search of food and people residing in the village are not able to live in peace.

In the evening, elephants start roaming freely in the streets, gardens, and houses. A herd of three, four wild elephants, sometimes together and sometimes divided, have entered the gardens of many people in the past few days and have eaten up and destroyed seasonal crops including banana trees, sugarcane, and vegetables.

Villagers told media that the people of the area have repeatedly informed the Loharghat Regional Forest Officer’s Office under the West Kamrup Forest Division of the forest department, but no action has been taken to drive the elephants away.

The residents of the area vented their anger that no action was taken yet. The residents of Rangamati area also said that the people have informed the local Loharghat Forest Officer’s Office several times about the infestation of elephants in the past.

The residents of the area have demanded the higher authorities of the forest department to protect the people from the problem of elephants in the Rangamati area which is not a protected forest and elephant sanctuary.
