Imphal, Dec 17: A 25-year-old youth sustained splinter injuries in a mortar attack in G.Songel village in Manipur’s Sugnu area on Saturday.
The youth has been identified as Jangkhomang Baite.
According to locals, at around 11.30 am, several mortar bombs were launched from Tangjeng Khunjao, a Meitei dominated village adjacent to G.Songel village.
The locals alleged that four mortar bombs were launched from Tangjeng Khunjao village. Two shells were targeted at G.Songel village and another two at M.Mollum village.
“Of the two shells targeted at G.songel village, only one exploded. The explosion took place in a local shop injuring Jangkhomang Baite who came to buy essential commodities,” said a local resident.
The other two shellings occurred at M.Mollum village but there is no casualty reported.
One local of G. Songel village alleged that there is biassed intervention by the security forces in the area.
He further alleged that the village volunteers were forcefully withdrawn from the frontline a couple of days ago and the bomb attack immediately followed.
Sugnu area is one of the worst affected in the ethnic conflict in Manipur.
Since the beginning of the conflict hundreds of houses have been razed to the ground and thousands forced to leave their homes.
