Imphal, April 25: Around 40 Kuki villagers, mostly women and children, have taken shelter in Kachouphung, a Tangkhul Naga village near the Indo-Myanmar border, after their homes were set ablaze by unidentified armed assailants.
The affected villagers were displaced from Gambal and Haiyeng villages in Manipur’s Kamjong district following the arson attack on April 23.
According to Kamjong Superintendent of Police Ningshem Vashum, a total of 28 houses were targeted—16 in Gambal and 12 in Haiyeng. Of these, 14 houses in Gambal and 8 in Haiyeng were completely destroyed.

Kachouphung, located about 14 km from the attacked villages, is currently providing shelter and basic assistance to the internally displaced persons (IDPS), most of whom fled with only a few belongings.
In the aftermath of the incident, the District Magistrate of Kamjong imposed restrictions in both villages as a precautionary measure. Police confirmed that no casualties were reported during the attack.
Several Kuki-Zo organisations, including the Kuki Inpi Manipur and the Kuki Students’ Organisation, have strongly condemned the violence. They have called for the immediate rebuilding of the destroyed villages, proper rehabilitation of the displaced families, and fair compensation for the losses incurred.
