GUWAHATI, May 27: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have welcomed the Union government’s decision to constitute a ‘High-Level Committee’ to study demographic change in the country, describing it as a significant step towards safeguarding national security and social stability.

Lauding the initiative as a historic intervention, Yumnam Khemchand Singh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of a “High-Powered Demography Mission” on August 15, 2025, followed by the Union Cabinet’s approval on September 11, 2025, marked a long-awaited move for border states such as Manipur.

The Manipur chief minister also welcomed Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks that demographic change is a serious issue linked not only to India’s sovereignty, but also to national security, law and order, social structure, and the protection of tribal societies.

“The people of Manipur are deeply grateful to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister for their unwavering commitment to securing India’s borders and addressing demographic imbalance,” Singh said.

He assured that the Manipur government would extend full cooperation to the High-Level Committee, which is expected to conduct a comprehensive assessment of demographic changes occurring across the country due to illegal immigration and other abnormal factors.

Reacting to the announcement, Himanta Biswa Sarma said illegal infiltration and demographic imbalance were not issues confined to Assam alone, but concerns with wider implications for India’s national security, cultural identity, and social harmony.

“Illegal infiltration and unusual demographic change are not merely the concern of any single state, but a serious issue linked to India’s national security, cultural identity and social balance,” Sarma said in a post on X.

Describing the formation of the panel as a “visionary and decisive step”, the Assam chief minister said the committee would examine demographic changes taking place across the country and recommend measures to address them effectively.

“Under the proactive leadership of Amit Shah, this committee will study the unusual demographic changes occurring across the country and present concrete solutions. This will further strengthen national security and enable serious addressing of the concerns of border areas,” he added.
