Imphal, Jan 10: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Thursday emphasized the importance of documenting the state’s history to preserve its culture and traditions and instill a sense of nationalism in the youth. He highlighted the need to remind younger generations of the sacrifices made by Manipur’s forefathers to regain freedom and sovereignty.

Singh made these remarks during the screening of the short film Chahi Taret Khuntakpa (Seven Years’ Devastation) at Kangla Hall. The 22-minute film, eligible for telecast on the History Channel, explores a significant chapter in Manipur’s history.

The Chief Minister announced plans to produce a full-length version of the film for screening in cinemas across the state. He also encouraged the film’s director, Romi Meitei, to create a short film on the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891, assuring that the state government would provide the necessary budget.

The screening event, organized by Manipur State Archaeology under the Department of Art and Culture, stemmed from a 2022 decision to produce films on Manipur’s historical events to raise public awareness.

Singh reaffirmed his government’s commitment to preserving Manipur’s history through such initiatives, which he believes are vital for cultural preservation and inspiring the youth.
