Biren Singh meets PM Modi face-to-face for the 1st time since eruption of ethnic violence

Must read

Guwahati, July 29: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, during his ongoing visit to Delhi. Singh and PM Modi discussed the situation in the state that was hit by massive ethnic violence last year.

This is the first such meeting between the two since ethnic violence erupted in the state more than 14 months ago.

The meeting was also attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Singh, who is in Delhi for the past two days, earlier met the Prime Minister during two group meetings- the NITI Aayog meeting and during the meeting of chief ministers and Deputy Chief ministers of BJP-ruled states. The meeting ended on a positive note.

N. Biren Singh’s flurry of meetings with the top BJP leaders seems to be a clear signal that the party leadership may not have an immediate plan to replace him with new face in the strife-torn state.

People in Manipur as well as the Opposition parties have questioned the Prime Minister’s silence over the Manipur issue in the past one year. The Congress won both the Lok Sabha seats in the State in the recent general elections.

The uncertainty and division gripping the Manipur BJP appear to have left the party high command with no choice other than continuing with Singh at the helm of the state government despite the persistent demands from the Opposition for his resignation.

The BJP suffered a debacle in the recent Lok Sabha polls in the state, which saw the Congress wrestling both the seats from the NDA.

At least 221 people have been killed and more than 60,000 people have been internally displaced since ethnic violence between the tribal Kuki-Zo and Meitei people erupted in the State on May 3. 2023.

On July 6, in one of the first detailed remarks made in the parliament, Modi told the Rajya Sabha that efforts were on to bring peace and history suggests that “social tensions” in the state are deep-rooted.
