Imphal, Sept 1: The death toll in the Koutruk village firing incident has increased to two people with many more injured, Manipur government confirmed on Sunday night. It also blamed the Kuki militants for the gruesome act.
In a press statement, the Home Department of Manipur government condemned the attack on the unarmed villagers in Koutruk in Imphal West, which resulted in the loss of two lives, including a woman, and left several others injured.
“The State Government has learnt about the unfortunate incident of attack on unarmed Koutruk villagers using drone, bombs and many sophisticated weapons on 01-09-2024 reportedly by Kuki militants causing death of 2 persons including one women and injuries to many,” the press statement said.
The deceased woman has been identified as Ngangbam Surbala, 31, who was brought dead at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in the state capital Imphal, 45 km from Kangpokpi.
The militants reportedly fired at Koutruk village from Nakhujang village in Kangpokpi at around 2.35 PM on Sunday. According to reports, the militants also used drone bombs, and other sophisticated weapons to target the villagers.
Expressing grave concern over this act of terror, the state government said “such act of creating havoc among the unarmed villagers reportedly by Kuki militants is seen as an attempt to derail the efforts taken by State Government to establish peace in the State.”
The government further said it has already taken up immediate action to control the situation and to punish those who were involved in Sunday’s attack on Koutruk Village in Imphal West.
