Manipur: Fresh violence erupts in Churachandpur after peace deal, one killed

Imphal, March 19: Violence returned to Churachandpur district on Tuesday night, hours after a peace agreement was reached between the Hmar and Zomi tribes over the assault of a Hmar leader on Sunday night.

The latest clash has led to the death of a person and injuries to several others. The deceased has been identified as 53-yearold Lalropui Pakhumate.

The violence broke out between the two tribes when the Hmar tribals’ opposed hoisting of Zomi community flag.

According to police sources, members of both the sides engaged in stone-pelting and vandalism of shops and properties, resulting in injuries to several people and death of one person.

In response, massive central forces have been deployed across Churachandpur. Security personnel conducted flag marches throughout the district to control and maintain the situation even as the overall situation remains volatile.

District Magistrate has also made a fresh appeal to the public, urging them to maintain peace and avoid taking the law into their hands. Community leaders have also been called upon to take proactive steps to rebuild trust and de-escalate tensions.

Meanwhile, the Zomi Students’ Union has called for an indefinite emergency shutdown in Churachandpur over the violence.
