Imphal, Oct 16: Following reports of pigs dying in large numbers owing to a yet unknown disease, the Imphal West district magistrate issued an order to banned transportation of pigs and sale of pork in Manipur’s Imphal West district.

According to reports, the Veterinary Department collected samples and sent them to Guwahati for laboratory testing.

After the news was spread, the meat sellers slashed the price of pork to Rs 180 per kg in the state. A few days ago, the market rate was Rs 380 per kg.

Dr. Ibotombi, Director of the Veterinary Department, said that most of the infected pigs, both dead and alive, were on the farms located at the Central Agricultural University, Iroishemba.
