Guwahati, July 08: Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition and a top Congress leader who has visited Manipur for the third time since the crisis began in May last year, has expressed his deep disappointment at the lack of improvement in the situation.
He described the situation in Manipur as a “tremendous tragedy. “The state is completely split in two,” he told reporters in Imphal.
“I was expecting some improvement in the situation but I was quite disappointed to see that the situation is still nowhere near what it should be,” Gandhi said.
“I visited the camps and heard the people there and their pain. I came here to listen to them, to build confidence in them, as somebody who is in the Opposition, to try and apply pressure on the government so that it acts” he said.
” The need of the hour is peace. Violence is hurting everyone. Thousands of families have been harmed, and properties have been destroyed. I have never seen anywhere in India what is going on here. The state is completely split in two” he said.
Rahul said he has come here as a brother, as somebody who wants to help you, who wants to work with you to bring back peace in Manipur.
“I am ready to do whatever I can, Congress party is ready to do whatever it can to bring back peace here,” he said.
“Anytime you want me to come here five times, ten times any amount of time you want me to come here, I am happy to go here. I am glad to listen to what you have to say and try to help you as the opposition leader.
”Manipur is the proud state of the Indian Union. Even as there is no tragedy, the Prime Minister should have come to Manipur” he said.
Rahul said this is a huge tragedy. ” I request the Prime Minister to take one day and two days of his time and listen to the people of Manipur. It will comfort the people of Manipur” he said.
“And we as Congress party are ready to support anything which could improve the situation,” Rahul said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi a few days back speaking in the Parliament emphasized the need to handle the situation with wisdom and patience.
“We must acknowledge the fact that the incidents of violence in Manipur are on a continuous downward trajectory which means the hope for peace was a definite possibility in Manipur” Modi had said.
” This is the time and duty of all stakeholders to toe the political and party lines to ensure peace and normalcy in Manipur. He reminded the House that the social conflict in Manipur is deeply rooted with a long history, leading to the imposition of President’s rule 10 times since independence” Modi said.
