Imphal, April 24: Indefinite curfew has been imposed in Gampal and Haiyang villages in Manipur’s Kamjong district after several houses in the two villages were set ablaze by unidentified miscreants on Wednesday morning.
The attack, which occurred around 9 AM, prompted the district administration to impose an indefinite curfew in both areas, which fall under the Sahamphung Sub-Division, from 2 PM on Wednesday.
According to an official order issued by Kamjong District Magistrate Rangnamei Rang Peter, the arson took place when most villagers were away tending to agricultural work in the fields. The incident is being seen as a serious threat to peace and public tranquillity in the region.
In response, the District Magistrate invoked powers under Sub-Section 1 of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, to restrict the movement of individuals outside their homes and prohibit any activities that could disrupt law and order.
“Such disturbances could lead to serious breaches of peace, endanger public tranquillity, and pose risks to human lives and property,” the order stated.
The curfew remains in effect until further notice, with exceptions made only for essential government services. Any gatherings or processions for events such as funerals or marriages or other celebrations will require prior written permission from the district administration or the Superintendent of Police.
Hungyo Yurreikan, SDC/Sahamphung, has been appointed as Executive Magistrate for the two villages to oversee the situation.
