Manipur: Kuki groups urge Meiteis not to cross buffer zone for traditional Ching Kaba ritual

Imphal, April 10: Six Kuki tribal organisations, including the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO), have jointly appealed to the Meitei community not to cross the buffer zone separating Kuki-Zo-Hmar inhabited areas, warning against any attempt to enter these regions.

In a joint statement issued on Thursday, the organisations expressed concern over reports suggesting that some members of the Meitei community plan to visit Thangting or Thangjing Hills—located in Churachandpur district—for the traditional Ching Kaba ritual in April.

“Until a political settlement for the Kuki-Zo-Hmar community is reached under the Constitution of India, no such movement or friendly gesture into our areas will be permitted,” the statement read.

The groups emphasized that maintaining the status quo and respecting the buffer zone is crucial to avoid further tension. They warned that any attempt to breach the neutral area would be strongly resisted by the local Kuki-Zo-Hmar population.

The organisations also urged the government to intervene and ensure measures are in place to protect the interests of both communities and prevent escalation.

Thangting, also known as Thangjing Hills, is a significant mountain range forming part of the western boundary of the Imphal Valley, falling within the jurisdiction of the Churachandpur district. It is considered sacred by the Meitei community.
