Imphal, Sep 1: At least eight people, including a tribal song composer and a village defence volunteer, lost their lives and at least 20 others were injured in Manipur’s Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts till Thursday after a gun fight between Kukis and Meiteis started three days ago. According to reports, two people died in Meitei-majority Bishnupur district on Thursday, while three died in adjoining Kuki-Zo-dominated Churachandpur district.
The death toll in this fresh firing incident in the past three days has gone up to eight, according to police sources.
Meanwhile, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), a joint body of the Kuki-Zo tribes, declared an emergency shutdown in violence-hit Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Friday after several Kuki-Zo-dominated areas of Manipur came under attack.

After a fresh gunfight between two rival ethnic groups started early Thursday morning, firing incidents continued in the foothills of Bishnupur and adjoining areas in Churachandpur district till late Thursday evening.
Also, the Army has foiled an arson attempt and prevented the loss of lives and homes near Leimakhong in Kangpokpi district.
