Shillong, April 22: In a major breakthrough, Meghalaya Police arrested a top leader of a banned Manipur-based militant outfit during a counter-insurgency operation in Nongthymmai, Byrnihat.
The arrested individual has been identified as Khundongbam Herojit Meitei, the Finance Secretary of the Kangleipak Communist Party – People’s War Group (KCP-PWG), a proscribed terrorist organization.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a special team from Ri-Bhoi District Police launched the operation and apprehended Meitei from a rented house where he had been hiding. According to police, he was actively involved in subversive activities, including extortion, not only in Meghalaya but also in neighboring states.

Police recovered two mobile phones and other incriminating materials from his possession. During interrogation, Meitei reportedly admitted to collecting funds for the militant group. Authorities believe he had been using the Assam-Meghalaya border as a hideout to evade arrest amid heightened security operations against insurgent groups in Manipur.
Initial findings suggest Meitei may also have links with Myanmar- and Nepal-based militant organizations. His criminal history includes a 2023 arrest in Manipur for possession of illegal firearms and another arrest in Dimapur in 2018 in connection with drug trafficking.
A case has been registered at Nongpoh Police Station and further investigation is underway.
