Imphal, April 28: On Thursday, miscreants set ablaze the venue where chief minister N Biren Singh was slated to address a meeting in Manipur’s Churachandpur district.
Singh is scheduled to visit the hill district on Friday.
“Situation is tense in Churachandpur after miscreants set ablaze the venue where Chief minister N Biren Singh will address a meeting on Friday,” said a senior police official.
A peaceful protest turned violent in Kangpokpiat Kangpokpi town in Manipur in March this year.
Five people were injured in the incident.
Chief minister N Biren Singh had said a Myanmar-based militant outfit had incited the protest.
The protestors alleged that certain lands in the hill districts have been wrongly declared as either Reserved Forest or wetlands by the state government.
The rally was organised against the alleged forceful eviction and demolition without proper rehabilitation or resettlement for the affected families.
The Kuki Students Organisation had stated that the manner in which the eviction drive was conducted “negates humanitarian values, leaving many homeless, and also violates right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution and Human Rights.”
After the incident, internet/ mobile data has been suspended in Churachandpur. To maintain law and order situation section 144 CrPc has been promulgated in Churachandpur.
