Imphal, July 20: Manipur police on Thursday arrested one accused and looking for the others in connection with the two young women paraded naked on camera on a road by a mob and subsequent alleged gang rape in Manipur’s Thoubal District on May 4, top police officer said.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, who holds the home portfolio, confirming the arrest, said that investigation is currently underway and the government would ensure strict action is taken against all the perpetrators, including considering the possibility of capital punishment.

Singh tweeted, “My hearts go out to the two women who were subjected to a deeply disrespectful and inhumane act, as shown in the distressing video that surfaced yesterday.

After taking a suo-moto cognisance of the incident immediately after the video surfaced, the Manipur Police swung to action and made the first arrest this morning.

A thorough investigation is currently underway and we will ensure strict action is taken against all the perpetrators, including considering the possibility of capital punishment.

Let it be known, there is absolutely no place for such heinous acts in our society.”

A top police official said that immediately after the horrific video surfaced on Wednesday, police registered a case at Nongpok Sekmai Police station in Thoubal District against unknown armed miscreants and launched a massive search to nab the perpetrators.

“The state police is making an all-out effort to arrest the culprits at the earliest. We would be able to arrest more accused by this evening. The search of the Manipur police and other security forces was also undertaken in the adjoining districts,” the police official told IANS on condition of anonymity.
