Imphal, July 3: In a spate of violence reported over the past 24 hours, armed miscreants have targeted various districts in Manipur, resulting in one fatality and injuries to two individuals, according to officials.
On the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, intermittent gunfire erupted between rival armed groups at Chinglangmei and Langza in the Samulamlam block of Churachandpur district. One person lost his life, while another sustained injuries during the exchange of fire.
Security forces swiftly responded to the incidents, initiating combing operations. However, the armed miscreants managed to flee into the nearby jungle, evading capture.
On Sunday night, armed miscreants unleashed a fresh wave of firing from the abandoned Napat village and Tangjeng Ahallup areas in Bishnupur district towards Khoubuk and Tangjeng Khunjao areas of Kakching district. Prompt police action helped bring the situation under control.
In a separate incident, suspected armed miscreants opened fire from adjacent hills onto Phougakchao Awang Leikai and Kwakta villages in Bishnupur district on Sunday night, injuring one individual.
On Monday, the armed miscreants once again resorted to firing from the nearby hill range towards Leikinthabi and Chirik villages in Imphal West district. Additionally, they set ablaze several farmhouses in the Chirik village.
State police and central forces launched an immediate operation in the affected areas to restore order and apprehend the culprits.
In a statement, Manipur police acknowledged the tense situation in certain locations, citing sporadic incidents of firing and the gathering of unruly mobs over the past 24 hours. However, most districts remain unaffected, maintaining normalcy.
To strengthen security measures, approximately 118 nakas (checkpoints) have been established across different districts of Manipur, both in the hills and the valley. In response to various violations of the law, the police have detained 326 individuals in different districts.
