Imphal, July 19:A shocking video depicting the distressing scene of two women being paraded naked on a road in Manipur by a group of men has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread condemnation and demands for immediate action.

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) has alleged that the two women were also gang-raped in a nearby field during the incident, which occurred on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, approximately 35 km from Imphal.

The heinous incident took place amidst escalating tensions between the valley-majority Meitei and the hill-majority Kuki tribe over the Meiteis’ demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status.

The ITLF, representing the Kuki tribe, said the women belong to the Kuki-Zo tribe and urged the National Commission for Women and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes to take immediate action.

The disturbing video shows the torment of the two helpless women, who are seen being constantly molested and pleading for mercy as they are led towards the paddy field. The gravity of the situation is further exacerbated by the perpetrators sharing the video on social media, further exposing the identity of the victims.

One of the victims said they were attacked by a Meitei mob, who asked them to take off their clothes if they wanted to survive. They were caught by the mob when trying to escape their village, which was attacked by the Meitei mob on May 4. She and her 21-year old neighbour were the victims, who had to bear the agony; they were severely assaulted and dragged and humiliated. She said her 21-year-old neighbour was gang raped in the field while she was spared.

As of now, the Manipur Police have not provided an official statement on the matter, leaving questions unanswered regarding potential arrests or filed cases.

Politicians and citizens alike have expressed their shock and outrage on social media, urging both the central and state governments to take swift action against those responsible for this horrifying act. Tripura’s Tipra Motha Party chief, Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, and Manipur resident and journalist, Hoihnu Hauzel, have highlighted the gravity of the situation and demanded justice for the victims, emphasizing that such a deplorable act challenges the very essence of humanity.
