Imphal, June 29: Party workers and locals staged a protest after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s carcade was stopped by the police in Bishnupur, Manipur.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi is returning back to the airport in Imphal from Bishnupur, he will be going to the pre-fixed program by helicopter.

K Meghachandra, MPCC President, said “People are standing on the roads to welcome Rahul Gandhi but Bishnupur SP, ASP, ADM and other police officials are blocking the roads. I have heard that there were instructions given by Manipur CM to block the roads. They are politicising this. They are only saying that the law and order situation is not good and are not allowing us to move ahead.”
However, Bishnupur SP Heisnam Balram Singh, said that Rahul Gandhi was stopped from moving forward and he was advised him to travel to Churachandpur via helicopter.
Bishnupur SP said that “there is a possibility of a grenade attack along the highway through which VIP Rahul Gandhi is moving. Keeping his security and safety in mind, we’ve not allowed him.”

Rahul Gandhi landed in Imphal on Thursday morning to continue his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, but he was stopped, said Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate.
Meanwhile, Indian Army on Thursday said that an unprovoked firing by armed rioters towards village Haraothel in Manipur had commenced at 5.30am.
Soon, troops were deployed in the area immediately mobilised to prevent escalation of situation.
The Indian Army said, “While enroute to the site, columns drew effective fire from armed rioters. Troops responded in a calibrated manner to prevent any collateral damage. Swift action by troops resulted in cessation of firing. Unconfirmed reports indicate some casualties. Build up of large crowds in the area also reported.”
