Imphal, Nov 1: Security forces on Wednesday evening fired in the air in Manipur’s capital Imphal to disperse the angry mob who came out on the streets to protest against the killing of a senior police officer on Tuesday by suspected militants.
On Tuesday, a Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) was shot dead by suspected militants at Moreh in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district bordering Myanmar.
According to police, an agitated mob clashed with the security forces and reportedly attempted to gherao the 1st Manipur Rifles complex, close to Raj Bhavan and Chief Minister’s Office in Imphal West district, demanding arms and ammunition.
“To control the mob, we first resorted to lathi charge and then opened fire in the air. Few civilians sustained minor injury in the clash,” a police official said.
Meanwhile, the Imphal West District administration in view of the tense situation in the capital city cancelled the relaxation period of the curfew.
