Imphal, Sept 19: In a powerful appeal for unity, two prominent student organizations from Manipur, the Kangleipak Wesean Student Association (KWSA) and Zo Wesean Students’ Union (ZWSU), have called for the peaceful coexistence of all communities in the state.
In an open letter addressed to the people of Manipur, the organizations urged a collective effort to overcome the divisions that have plagued the state, emphasizing the historical ties between Meiteis and Kukis.
The letter highlighted the long-standing relationship between the two communities, recalling moments of mutual support. “The Meiteis and Kukis have shared a bond throughout history. When the Burmese sought to invade, Meiteis sheltered the Kukis. In return, Kukis served as soldiers in the kingdom of Kangleipak,” the letter stated, urging people not to forget their history of solidarity. “So why is it that now, in 2024, we allow hatred and division to take root? Why do we turn our backs on a history of coexistence?”
The student bodies argued that the current conflict is not a natural division but is being fuelled by external forces and fringe elements, who profit from the chaos. “Who gains when Kuki and Meitei brothers shed each other’s blood? Not our people, but those who want to see us weak and fragmented,” the letter questioned, calling on people to resist outside manipulation.
Further emphasizing the cultural similarities between the Meitei and Kuki communities, the letter pointed out shared languages, customs, and festivals. “We are not strangers, we are neighbours, allies, and family. It is time to remember this truth,” the letter urged.
The organisations also slammed the community leaders, accusing them of exploiting the conflict for personal gain. “We have had enough of so-called leaders who claim to speak for us while feeding ethno-fascism,” the letter stated. “You speak of unity, but your actions create division… you are betraying the very people you pretend to protect.”
Ibemani Moirangthem, General Secretary of the KWSA, also warned against being manipulated by national forces with ulterior motives. “Whether it is the typical agenda that is often implemented in the Northeast or other national elements seeking to destabilize us, we are being used. A divided Wesea is easier to control.”
He called for both Meiteis and Kukis to reject the narrative of division. “It is time to rise above the hatred. Meiteis and Kukis are integral to Wesea. Our future lies in unity, where both communities work together to heal the wounds of the past,” he added.
M. Matthew Haokip, speaker of the ZWSU, echoed this sentiment, calling on the youth to take the lead in shaping a peaceful future. “We, the youth, call upon our elders: step aside and let us build a future without hate. We reject your ethno-fascism, your violence, and your greed.”
Addressing those who feel abandoned by their leaders, Haokip stated, “You are not alone. We stand with you. Let us once again stand together, as our ancestors did. Let us choose peace over war, love over hate, and unity over division.”
