Imphal, March 11: In a tragic incident, three Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were killed and 9 others injured when the bus they were travelling in veered off the road and plunged into a deep gorge near Changoubung village in Manipur’s Senapati district on Tuesday.
The bus, carrying 15 BSF personnel, was returning to their camp in Kangpokpi district when the incident occurred. A police official informed that of the 15 personnel, 12 were critically injured, of which three succumbed to their injuries later. The remaining nine personnel are undergoing treatment at the Senapati District Hospital.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishing a swift recovery for the injured.
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also expressed his pain over the tragic incident. “Aggrieved by the unfortunate demise of three BSF jawans in a road mishap, which also resulted in injuries to 13 others at Changoubung village in Senapati district today. I extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved families and share their pain and loss. May the Almighty provide them strength and fortitude in this hour of grief. I pray for the departed souls to rest in peace and wish a speedy recovery for the injured,” he wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.
The BSF has been actively deployed in Manipur to address the ongoing ethnic violence between the tribal Kuki-Zo and non-tribal Meitei communities, which erupted on May 3, 2023. The conflict has resulted in atleast 258 deaths and displaced more than 60,000 individuals, with thousands seeking refuge in relief camps across various districts.
The unrest began following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ protesting the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The violence has resulted in extensive property damage, including the destruction of numerous homes and religious sites.
