Tura, March 25: A massive fire engulfed the house of former Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) MDC Fersen Ch Momin, son of Meghalaya’s first chief Minister Capt. Williamson Sangma, on Tuesday afternoon.
The house, located in Hawakhana in Tura, has been extensively damaged with fire fighters from the Fire and Emergency department fighting the blaze for almost an hour before containing it. 4-5 fire trucks were used to tame the fire.
Fortunately no one was harmed in the incident.
The blaze broke out just before noon and is suspected to have been caused by a electrical short circuit.
The house where the blaze occurred is part of the compound where the ancestral home of the first chief minister is located.
Fersen Ch Momin is the father of Daryl William Cheran Momin – the son-in-law of Leader of Opposition and veteran politician Dr Mukul Sangma.
The original home was not affected by the blaze.
Additionally, the location where the fire incident occurred also houses a gas agency, called Momin Gas Agency.
The area is also is close to the AOC petrol pump.
Roads leading to Hawakhana from Babupara and bazaar has been temporarily closed off for easy movement of fire trucks.
Furthermore, power supply to Chandmary, DC office and Bazar areas has been temporarily cut in view of the fire which broke out in Hawakhana. Supply will be restored after getting the clearance from the CEO, DDMA.
